As always, take what resonates and leave the rest.
The image symbol received in meditation and offered for this week is:
A hex wrench.
Have you built IKEA furniture? If you are honest with yourself, would it have been your first choice for your bed, dining table, or dresser? While their marketing is cute, they aren’t meant to be crafts-pieces or family heirlooms. Yet they serve the near term purpose. They furnish your first living space as an adult, or maybe they refurnish your first post-divorce living space.
And wielding that infuriating hex wrench among the sorted nuts and bolts provided a sense of accomplishment. With only a hex wrench and your vocabulary of curse words, you assembled hundreds of pounds of flat packages into structures that actually looked like the pictures in the catalog, even if they felt a bit sketchy in real life.
Five or ten years later, maybe you decide it is time to splurge on something closer to a crafts-piece, something assembled without a 4 inch hex wrench, because the person you have become deserves better than a bed with a made-up Norwegian pet name.
Brief intermission for the astrology of the week: Venus makes a conjunction with Uranus at 29° Taurus on July 4th.
When I drew a tarot card to flesh out the July 4th conjuction (when two planets are joined) between Venus and Uranus in Taurus, the card which came up was the II of Swords. This card can describe that moment when you finally get out of your head because your pros and cons list has not brought you closer to a decision. This can feel like do or die time, emotionally. It can feel as though your preferred options are just out of your vision or your reach. It can have the energy of a hex being put on you, freezing you in place.
Relating this back to our hex wrench, perhaps we cannot afford to replace all the IKEA stuff with the furniture we really want (Venus in Taurus is about material harmony), yet we have a strong impulse to shake things up in our space (Uranus in Taurus loves a spontaneous restructure). We are at a decision point. We could incrementally replace each piece as our budget allows, or we could borrow money to buy what we want, or we could decide on a totally different option (become a monk, live in an RV, etc.)
We would have to be a glutton for punishment to order up a pallet of new IKEA furniture and take up the same tools (hex wrench and curse words), right?
With U.S. Independence Day looming, maybe we are called to take a look at the structures we have been working, living, and creating upon. We always have choices, even when we can’t see them.
I love hearing from you, so leave a comment if anything resonates.

Very timely! I keep pulling the 2 of swords and this post resonates in terms of giving up old tools that are no longer serving. Thank you 🙏
Two of Swords is not my favorite. I know the cards are suppose to be neutral. But, I have a negative association nonetheless with stuckness like the Eight of Swords.. In my life experience, it comes up when I'm looking for some peace and solace. I just want to left alone. There are times I just want to throw the covers over my head because I'm feeling overwhelmed by indecision, but also too much stimulus. I see the two of swords as the desire for objectivity, yet, the refusal to make a move. There a stoicism — the idea that the mind can rule. You can cover your heart by crossing your arms over, but it doesn't mean that feelings aren't there. Sometimes, doing something is better than doing nothing! I find that this card says to me, time to move. Also: don't forget your heart! Not every decision can be made via a pro and con list.
I would agree with “ we have a strong impulse to shake things up in our space” — that's how I feel. I'm rearranging my home space. I could use some new furniture as well as some organizing tips. I’m indecisive. I just look at stuff around me. I don't know what I'm going to do. I've got to figure out desk space, bedroom, exercise space and creativity area. It’s all become one! 😆 Not a great look. A recipe for clutter. Maybe I am refusing to look at it! 2 of Swords. 😆
Thank you for allowing me to reflect upon how this relates to my life.
